How hard is it to properly adjust timing without a light?

I don't have a light and a few o2 owners from yesterday's Bethesda C&C said it was off. I know how to do it, but I don't want to make it worse. You are supposed to listen to it, but is the best sound going to be the best setting?

And yes, those are Hellas on a Chevy Van.

The way I did it on my bug was as followed:

1. Advance the timing until the idle speed reaches it's peak. It should slow down if you go past this point in either direction.
2. Back off a degree or two.
3. Shut it down.
4. Try starting it a few times - if it is hard to start, retard the timing.
5. Drive it hard up some hills. Go WOT through the whole rpm range. If it pings, retard the timing.

Can't you rent a timing light from a car parts store for free?

Can you set timing by ear? Yea. Will it be right? Probably not. You can end up with more advance than you need. Don't forget to disconnect the vacuum can (and plug the hose) if you've got one.

I have this one because I have an MSD box:

Works great and is pretty inexpensive.

Trust me, just rent a light or pick one up from harbour freight for maybe $15.
